About David McCann

David is a columnist for the Irish News, lecturer, elections analyst, and host of the Stormont Sources podcast, and Strategic Political Analyst at Brown O’Connor Communications.

A self-confessed ‘political nerd’, his interest in politics was sparked early by his grandmother, who would walk him to polling stations, tell him about candidates and elections, and encourage his curiosity.

David holds a PhD in relations between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland (1959-72) from Ulster University, where he also worked as a lecturer in Politics and International Studies. Currently, he serves as a Research Fellow at the Constitution Society, where in 2024 he authored the report "Reporting the divide. Lessons for any future Referendum."

David co-hosts the Stormont Sources podcast alongside Tim Cairns and Michael McKernan, offering in-depth analysis on Northern Ireland politics. He publishes opinion columns in the Irish News and regularly participates in media interviews, panels and historical and political discussion programmes.

Dr McCann is also the Deputy Editor of Slugger O'Toole, Northern Ireland's biggest current affairs website, where he writes extensively on Irish unity.
